No house has shaped perfumery more than Chanel. N°5 introduced aldehydes to fine fragrance in 1921 and effectively invented the modern abstract perfume; a century later it still sells.

Bleu de Chanel is the most commercially successful men's fragrance of the last fifteen years — citrus, incense and dry cedar, faultlessly balanced. Coco Mademoiselle does the same job on the women's side, orange and patchouli in a construction that has aged remarkably well. Chance Eau Tendre is the lighter, fruitier option. Allure Homme Sport remains the best warm-weather Chanel for men.
Chanel rewards buying the right concentration — the EDP versions are noticeably richer than the EDT.
