Leather Perfumes
Leather is the most characterful accord in perfumery — smoky, slightly animalic, sometimes tarry, always distinctive. It is not a beginner's category, and that is rather the point.
How leather is built
There is no leather extract. The accord is constructed, historically from birch tar and castoreum, today more often from safraleine, isobutyl quinoline and suede-like synthetics. The result ranges from soft suede to the sharp, smoky bite of a new leather jacket.
The benchmarks
Tom Ford Ombré Leather is the modern reference — suede softened with cardamom and jasmine. Dior Fahrenheit takes a stranger route, pairing leather with violet and petrol notes into something genuinely odd and much loved. Gucci Guilty Absolute and Diesel Only The Brave sit at the darker end.
Leather fragrances have exceptional longevity and suit evening wear, cooler months and anyone who wants something that will not be mistaken for anything else.
