Citrus Perfumes

Citrus is the oldest idea in perfumery and still one of the best. The original eaux de cologne of the 18th century were built almost entirely on bergamot, lemon and neroli, and the appeal has not changed: nothing else smells as immediately clean.

The citrus notes and how they differ

Bergamot is the workhorse — slightly bitter, floral, and present in the opening of an enormous proportion of all fragrances. Lemon is sharper and more literal. Grapefruit brings a tart, slightly sweaty edge that reads as modern. Neroli and petitgrain, both from the bitter orange tree, are softer and greener. Mandarin is the sweetest of them.

The one weakness

Citrus molecules are small and volatile, which is exactly why they smell so bright — and exactly why they vanish. In UAE heat a pure citrus cologne can be gone within an hour.

Modern perfumery solves this by anchoring citrus over woods, musk or ambroxan, so the freshness lasts rather than evaporating. When choosing a citrus fragrance for this climate, look for one with a proper base, and choose the Eau de Parfum concentration where it exists.

When citrus is the right choice

Daytime, office, heat, and any situation where you want to smell clean rather than noticeable. Citrus is also the most universally inoffensive family in perfumery — if you are buying for someone whose taste you do not know, it is the safest ground.
