Floral Perfumes
Floral is the largest family in perfumery and the most varied. It stretches from the crisp green freshness of a peony soliflore to the heady, almost narcotic weight of tuberose and ylang-ylang.
The key flowers
Rose is the most important material in the region — paired with oud it forms the classic Arabian accord. Jasmine is richer and more indolic, with a warmth that borders on animalic at high concentrations. Iris smells of powder and cool earth rather than flowers, and is one of the most expensive naturals in use. Peony, freesia and lily of the valley read light, clean and modern.
Choosing by occasion
Light, watery florals suit daytime and the office. Richer white florals and rose-oud compositions carry the weight needed for evenings, weddings and celebrations. If you are new to fragrance, a floral is the easiest place to start — the family is broad enough that there is almost certainly something in it for you.
